Prep for gre

The most effective way to prepare for GRE is individually, with a tutor or independently. Of course, in the second case it will be more difficult to study, but much cheaper. However, it will not be possible to save at all – a variety of manuals and other materials for preparing for GRE, as a rule, are not available in free mode.

The main advice is not to disregard the official website of the exam. Interesting articles, video courses (available by subscription) regularly appear on it, and with the help of this resource you can also practice passing GRE (also for money).

As you prepare for GRE, focus on two things: the vocabulary and specifics of the exam questions. As with any other test, they are very specific. You can speak English perfectly, but you can’t pass GRE without understanding its systems and requirements.

There are a few aids to help you, which Quora’s Q&A website says are very useful:

  1. Kaplan GRE Premier 2015.
  2. ETS The Official Guide to the GRE Revised General Test (with CD).
  3. Barron’s Guide to the GRE.
  4. 4. Cracking the New Gre (English) Pap/DVD Release by Pearson Review.
  5. Manhattan GRE 5 lb. Book of GRE Practice Problems.

Got 317 points on GRE:

When my friends and I were prep for gre, I made some serious mistakes that I would like to warn others.

  1. Don’t be stingy on training materials. Ignoring good books in an effort to save a few bucks is stupid.
  2. Practice solving GRE tests every weekend. A lot of people start doing it only 10 days before the exam, which is fundamentally wrong. This training will help you identify your weaknesses and focus on them.
  3. Do not underestimate the Quantitative Reasoning section. Mathematics in GRE is really basic, but it is difficult to pass. It is an exam for speed, without enough practice and appropriate strategies it is difficult to pass.
  4. Verbal Reasoning is not only about learning 5 thousand new words. You should know many nuances of their meanings and learn to work with context. Yes, without a wide vocabulary, the Verbal Reasoning section is difficult to pass, but you can only score 145 points with it alone.
  5. Be sure to use the Official GRE Guide. No other textbook will reflect the real specifics of GRE.
  6. Decide 5 sections instead of 4. During my preparation I found that in many preparation materials only 4 sections (Verbal and Quantitative), but in reality GRE consists of 5 sections, many people forget about it.
  7. There is no magic formula for success. Simply by downloading the preparatory materials and buying textbooks, you will not help yourself. How hard is the gre? You have to work hard and hard to get a lot of points on GRE.

I’ve taken GRE twice, so I can give some helpful recommendations to newcomers. In general, it’s a very funny exam with its quirks, and you can’t pass it just by solving a couple of tests.

If you have a good vocabulary and you have read a lot of books in English, it will take you 3 months to prepare. Otherwise, you should start early, about 5-6 months before taking the GRE.
The main advice: read a lot, solve mathematical problems and pass at least 10 tests as prep for gre.
In Verbal Reasoning section only knowledge of a large number of words is not enough. You need to learn to read quickly and understand the general meaning of a passage or sentence.
In my opinion, mathematics in GRE has become tougher with time. So get ready for challenging tasks and never hope to get 170 points on the move. For preparation, I recommend using Manhattan manuals.
When deciding the tests, keep the timer on in your head.
It is always important to learn on your own regularly. The Magoosh website has some good preparation instructions.
Repeat and learn the vocabulary. All the time. Again and again. 100 new words per day is not the limit. Use cards if you feel comfortable with it.
GRE give about 4 hours, you have to be physically and mentally prepared for it. Be calm and focused on the exam day.
The part of GRE where you need to read texts is, in my opinion, one of the most difficult. In it I recommend to focus not on finding the right answer, but on understanding the strategy of tasks.
Prepare your own list of words that cause you difficulties. Do not repeat anything on the day of the exam and in the evening before it.
