  1. On Wednesday, October 28, 2009 at 3:00 p.m. the Health Policy Committee will discuss and hear public testimony regarding the six-bill package that was sponsored by Senator Tom George (R-Kalamazoo). The package imposes redundant and severe restrictions so that it will be virtually impossible for embryonic stem cell research to progress in our state. The hearing is open to the public and will be held at the Senate Hearing Room, Ground Floor, Boji Tower, 124 W. Allegan Street, Lansing, 48933. To learn more about the regulations governing stem cell research in our state, visit our website www.stemcellresearchformichigan.com and view the Michigan Current Law and Regulations and Ethics sections.

  2. House Joint Resolution II (HJRII) was introduced on October 14, 2009 and referred to the Judiciary Committee. HJRII is a proposed amendment to the state constitution of 1963 that would have the term 'person' apply to every human being from the beginning of the biological development, including fertilization. The amendment requires a 2/3 vote in both houses and a statewide vote. If passed, HRJII will overturn the people’s vote for Proposal 2. Click (HouseJointResolutionII link) to view the proposed amendment.

  3. The passage of Proposal 2 gave hope to millions of Michigan patients and their
families and positioned our state to compete for federal funding. On March 9, 2009, President Obama signed an executive order allowing the federal government to invest millions of dollars in new embryonic stem cell research. The University of Michigan has received 13 federal stimulus grants worth $6.8 million for stem cell research. The state of Michigan has received 395 stimulus grants through the National Institutes of Health, placing us ninth among states. Click (Associated Press article link) to view the entire article.

  4. Governor Jennifer Granholm announced in a press conference on October 15, 2009 that Detroit would host the 2010 World Stem Cell Summit, October 4 – 6. The summit will be held at the Renaissance Center in Detroit and will attract roughly 1,200 attendees from the advocacy, education and biotechnology fields. Click (Gov. Granholm press release link) to view press release.

“Last year, Michigan voters expressed their confidence in the potential of embryonic stem cell research to bring healing and hope to those with debilitating and life-threatening diseases. The fact that this summit is coming to Michigan is a sign of the nation’s confidence in our state’s potential to lead this pioneering effort. Michigan’s universities, its talented researchers and scientists and its renowned medical institutions will have much to offer.” ~ U.S. Senator Carl Levin
